After
an extended trip (4 hours) by school vans, we played the Brunswick
School JV team. Because of the long ride we were a bit slow. We generated
a lot of shots from the point, but very few made it to the back of
the net. Most of our shots either missed the net entirely or were
swallowed up by the Brunswick goaltender, who played admirably. Surprisingly,
we were given many power play opportunities. Because of the larger
ice surface, our 'umbrella' players were able to pass and shoot with
little opposition. We did not 'crash' the net well, nor did we screen
the goaltender. There was a bit of a tendency among all players, particularly
our 'torpedoes' to watch the HB's and the D breakout, pass, and shoot.
We need to get all of our players involved in all aspects of the game.
There is also a particular weakness in identifying breakout responsibilities
and getting to the appropriate areas. All in all though, especially
considering such a long van ride, we played OK.
It's
funny in the huddle sometimes: Every one of our receivers wants the
ball, and they won't hesitate to say so. They'll tell me they can
do this or that. That doesn't bother me at all. Of course, there are
times when everyone is talking and time is running out, and I'll have
to tell them to shut up. That's part of playing quarterback. But as
a quarterback, you want to play with
people who want the ball. It's the players who don't want it you have
to worry about. -- Dan Marino
