Upland Country Day School
About Upland
Upland is an independent coed day school for grades pre-K through 9. We are a small school, so we know each child well. Individual attention is a hallmark of an Upland education.
Beginning in pre-K with half-days, Upland aims to give students appropriate tools to explore a world of possibilities. Through the progression of grades, there are gradual increases in the length of the school day, and in the opportunities and challenges provided, to help prepare students for their futures. Our programs in the arts, athletics, and academics are designed so that each child participates in a wide range of activities.
Many people are surprised that Upland goes through the ninth grade, rather than ending at eighth grade; our explanation is simple, and, like many other aspects of the school, is based on what is best for children. Our ninth grade provides students who are at a critical point in their development with outstanding opportunities for leadership. When many of their peers are at the bottom of the pecking order, Upland ninth graders are team captains, editors of the yearbook, leads in the play, and officers in Student Council. When our students graduate, they are ready to contribute richly to their new school communities, continuing the tradition of participation learned at Upland.
Our Location
Upland is located in the beautiful, rolling pastureland of southeastern Chester County, in Kennett Square, PA. Our campus is made up of six buildings clustered around an old farmhouse, which today serves as the main administrative building. In addition to the farmhouse, there are the Kleburg Center for science, the ice rink, the "Barn" (athletic and arts facilities), the Technology Center, the new Primary Center (for grades pre-K through 1), and the Academic Center. The Academic Center is the heart of the school; this building houses the library, with classrooms for grades 2 through 9 opening into this central space.
